Heaton started for Gareth Southgate's side in their last outing against France, but with competition from Jack Butland, Fraser Forster, Jordan Pickford and Joe Hart, a place is next summer's World Cup squad is anything but guaranteed.
As such, Heaton is hoping to continue to impress during the coming Premier League season after a series of throughly impressive displays last time out.
'The World Cup at the end of the season is always there, it doesn't go away, but to have a chance of being involved in that you need performances week-in, week-out,' explained Heaton.
'I don't think there's any given right to pull on that England shirt or be in the squad. I don't think any player should ever feel comfortable.
'The competition is really strong, they're all fantastic goalkeepers, and that will only breed more success and get more out of people. I, for one, am looking forward to the challenge.'
