The Portuguese arrived in the Spanish capital in May 2010 to sign a four-year deal with 'Los Blancos', however he didn't manage to complete his contract, instead leaving the club a year early in June 2013.
Despite his glittering career and incredible successes elsewhere, Mourinho himself would be the first to admit that his time in Spain was not an overwhelming success.
The now Manchester United chief won just three trophies in three years in the Real hotseat; one La Liga, one Spanish Super Cup and a Copa del Rey and his time is often remembered more for his sidelining of Real icon Iker Casillas.
There had been many rumours as to why Mourinho left the club when he did, but the 54-year-old has now moved to give his version of events, telling French publication 'Telefoot': "Leaving Real Madrid was my decision, my daughter had just gone to study in London but it was also a personal decision. My best results tend to come when I'm happy and during my third season at Real, that was not the case," he explained.
Real's loss was Chelsea's gain, with the 'Blues' legend returning to his former club and winning a League and League Cup double during his second season in charge.
Manchester United are now reaping the benefits of Mourinho's management, with the 'Red Devils' having made an impressive start to the new campaign.
