The Dutchman was replaced at Old Trafford by Jose Mourinho after two difficult years at the helm, but the former Barcelona boss says that United should have dealt with his sacking better, with it being well-known that he was to be replaced by the Portuguese long before his eventual sacking.
The 66-year-old said that he bore no ill will towards Mourinho, though he did suggest that the United boss need to reign in his emotions on occasion.
Speaking on Saturday when covering the match between United and Liverpool for Dutch TV, Van Gaal said: 'How I have suspected it, the way his transfer as a manager to Manchester United went was not elegant at all, that resulted in my sacking.
'In principle, he (Mourinho) is not a bad guy. He can be sympathetic and he was this way when he was my assistant in the past.
'But he lets himself go out of control too often.'
Nevertheless, the Dutchman doesn't regret his time with the 'Red Devils' and let slip about a strange agreement he had with Ed Woodward..
'I have great memories and my relationship with all the staff and fans was great during my time at United,' he explained.
'Our CEO Ed Woodward promised me six bottles of Ribeiro red wine every time I would beat Liverpool.
'Well, I won four times, so I had a lot of those bottles.'
