It emerged on Thursday that Semedo had been reprimanded in custody under an attempted murder charge and was also facing further charges including "illegal detention, illegal possession of weapons and robbery with violence" after police found a gun on his property during a search of his premises.
He appeared in front of the Spanish court later that day to undergo his bail hearing in which he was handed provisional detention, without bail. It meant Semedo spent the whole of Friday morning back at the courts to plead his case, but it was to no avail as he was seen leaving the building in handcuffs.
His misery has since been compounded after his current team, Villarreal, have announced that they are suspending the 23-year-old from their employment without pay until the matter is resolved.
The club's official statement read: "Villarreal CF wants to show its dismay at the serious crimes charged against Ruben Semedo by the judge of Court Number 6 in Lliria. Always with due respect to the presumption of innocence, the club has decided to suspend the player without pay until the matter is sorted".
